Our Drivers

Just last week we were able to finish filling our drivers’ schedule.  Since we will be supported by the Southern Comfort van and bike cargo trailer all the way across the country, it is very important for the six riders to have a good support crew of drivers to handle getting the van and trailer from one overnight town to the next.  As a rule the driver will not be following along with us each day but instead will have time to relax and see the sights along the way while missing a week or two of our midwest winter.  We will be flying each one out to our route and back home after their shift of driving is over.

Driver Dan Bertsch is from Indianola, Iowa. Along with his wife, Irene, he retired from teaching at Indianola High School several years ago. Dan keeps busy teaching math at Simpson College and substitute teaching in the Indianola School District. Dan will be riding out to San Diego with us and take us all the way to the Mesa, Az.

Driver Joe Gezel is from Indianola, Iowa. Joe has several jobs to keep him out of his wife Dorothy’s hair. In addition to having his own furniture repair and refinishing business, Joe is a maintenance engineer for a couple organizations in Indianola and enjoys being a crossing guard at a nearby elementary school. Joe’s favorite role however is being a grandfather to his grandchildren.  Joe will join us in Mesa, Az and take us to El Paso, Tx.

Driver Rick Runyan, from Indianola, IA, retired from McAnich Corporation after many years as a heavy equipment mechanic. He’s been married to his wife Jacci for almost 43 years and has 3 children and 9 grandchildren. He enjoys baseball and going to ISU football games.  Rick will join us in El Paso and help us get across a wide swath of Texas to Austin.

Driver Teresa McQueen-Crawford is Phil’s daughter.  She and her husband, Mat live in Chicago, where she is a special needs teacher for the Academy for Global Citizenship.  Teresa is using her spring break from school to help us out and will join us in Austin, Tx and help us get to the New Orleans area of Louisiana.

Driver Jill Aldredge is from Council Bluffs, Ia. where she lives with fiance and rider, Allen Cohrs.  She works as an Account Manager at Silverstone Group in Omaha Ne..  She is also a member of the International Wildlife Rehab Council and a volunteer for Nebraska Wildlife Rehab where she cares for orphaned and injured animals until they can be returned to the wild.  Jill will join us in New Orleans and provide support all the way to our final destination of St. Augustine, Florida.
